The following is the text of an address by Cardinal Justin Rigali to the 2007 Serra International Convention

Atlanta, GA, USA 12 August 2007

The great value of our gathering together today is the fact that we are assembled in the name of Jesus, the Son of the Eternal Father, the Son of Mary. We gather together as members of His Church called to fulfill a mission for which we are empowered by His Church.

We gather at an historic moment in the life of the Church and the life of Serra International. Serra International is conscious of the mission that the Church has recognized for it - a holy mission, an ecclessial mission, a vital mission. There is great need for priestly vocations, for holy priestly vocations, and for a ministry of lay support for our priests. In addition, in a different but related way there is a great need for vocations to the consecrated life. In supporting also this important work Serra has given a great measure of assistance. Serra Objectives & Purposes

  • To foster and promote vocations to the ministerial priesthood in the Catholic Church as a particular vocation to service, and to support priests in their sacred ministry;
  • To encourage and affirm vocations to consecrated religious life in the Catholic Church; and
  • To assist its members to recognize and respond in their own lives to God's call to holiness in Jesus Christ and through the Holy Spirit.

President’s Christmas Message

Dear Fellow Serrans:

As I write this message on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, I am reminded of the words of our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, who wrote,

“I invoke the maternal protection of Our Lady of Guadalupe so that she may protect and inspire those who govern in their difficult task as promoters of the common good, and renew the bonds of Christian fellowship for the good of all the people.”

These are most appropriate words that we should ponder as we journey through this Holy Season of Advent waiting for the Miracle of Miracles, the birth of our Redeemer, Jesus Christ, God’s only son.

As Serrans and as Catholics, we have much to be thankful for. The Dialogue Session in Omaha discussing the future structure of Serra was a milestone for our beloved organization, bringing Serrans together under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and producing an Agreement that every participant approved. Through the prayers and support of Cardinal Rigali, Archbishop Curtiss and Bishop Cupich, we were able to resolve the major issues that confronted Serra and produce a united plan that will now be submitted to the Serra International ...Continued...
